The International Summer Jazz Workshop Prague (ISJWP) is a seven-day intensive course in jazz music suitable both for novices and accomplished musicians who want to improve or hone their skills; make new contacts and spend one pleasant week with jazz music. The faculty typically includes leading Czech and foreign jazz musicians who participate in the contemporary jazz scene in Europe or the USA and who are excellent teachers as well. The lessons are divided partially according to the students’ level. Instructions for individual instruments take place in groups every morning (master-classes for advanced students or standard courses for all levels). Afternoons are taken up by rehearsal in ensembles of various personnel and genres which are lead by the members of faculty and which are followed by a lecture of the day. The students get a chance to hear the teachers or other guests play every night in the Dobeška Theatre or watch jazz-related films, which are followed by students’ jam sessions. The workshop offers a high quality instructions and a range of related additional programs. It is attended every year by more than 100 students both from the Czech Republic and from abroad.

In the year 2009 we NEWLY open a class of Composition and arrangements. What is also NEW? 3 different classes for singers: standard, improvisation, latino. We also NEWLY provide professional bands for all the singers. All our evening concerts, jam sessions and film projections will be placed at a NEWLY opened jazz club in the city centre of Prague called Jazz Dock (see www.jazzdock.cz). You have to be there and see this gorgeous place on the river Vltava with an amazing view of old Prague. The Dobeška theatre will also be available for three nights to anyone interested in more private jamming, it’ll also be possible to request a lector’s consultation for the jam at Dobeška one day in advance. Composition and arrangements.
With this course, I’m looking forward to meeting both students who already have some experience with composing or arranging as well as beginners who are seldom interested in this side of music. With the beginners, we’ll focus on writing melodies, harmonies, rhythms and forms progressing step by step, and this way at the end of the course everyone should have some sort of a portfolio; even though this will surely require individual work apart from our lessons.
Experienced students interested in further developing their ideas, compositions and arrangements or eager to hear comments, ideas or tips will have a chance of consulting them with me on the basis of individual hours within the regular morning course.
The course is also open to students who will be coming to study an instrument
and would like to have an hour or two of composition aside. This will possibly
be done even in the afternoons, that is in the time dedicated to bands. There
are going to be bands ready to perform the complete compositions.
I’m looking forward to meeting you.

Those interested in our vocal course will be able to attend the following: the jazz standards course (with Aga Zaryan), the improvisation course (with Winand Gágor; an interpreter will be available for both Czech and English students) and the latino course (with Elsa Valle).
All vocal students will have a chance to join courses of all three lectors. Aga Zaryan would like to dedicate most of her time for this year on working with advanced students of her own choice; those interested in this kind of education, which will take five days out of the workshop’s seven, should send their own recording with a song of their own choice to workshop@czechjazz.org, do not send later than 20th June). Aga will listen to these recordings and choose those students that will get individual care; they will also be emailed back with sheet music that they’ll later be working on together throughout the course. Aga Zaryan will dedicate the remaining two days to working with other students, while the rest of her group will have a chance to spend one day with Gábor and the other with Elsa.
Students that won’t make it to Aga Zaryan’s class on the basis of selected own recordings will first take five days of class with Gábor and Elsa and will further advance to Aga Zaryan’s class in the last two days of the workshop.
Three vocal classes will have two professional bands available and ready to perform with them throughout the whole week and the evenings. The band will be composed of Jan Jakubec on bass, Martin Bruner or Vít Křišťan on piano, drummers Tomáš Vokurka and Martin Kopřiva, Carlo “Magno” Zegarra on percussions and others.
On 23rd July, there will be a latino jam lead by Elsa Valle at Jazzdock starting 9PM.
On 24th July, there will be a special concert of all singers and their respective bands at Jazzdock starting 9PM.
Classes will be held with one or more lectors according to the number of signed-up students and their level of advancement. They’ll also be divided into a beginners group and three other groups of advanced students.
This year’s International Summer Jazz Workshop Prague 2009 will be opened by teachers' concert at Jazzdock, starting 8PM.
On the July 18th and 19th starting 9PM, there are going to be two concerts introducing all lectors of this year’s workshop.
On the July 19th starting 10PM, there will be a film projection of the documentary made throughout last year’s workshop.
This will be a special concert involving musicians, who have previously taken the Internation Summer Jazz Workshop and have since became professional musicians and stable parts of the Czech jazz scene.
